Although only about seventy-five young women work as apprentices today, representations of\u00a0<em>maiko<\/em>\u00a0abound in the city. Perky maiko decorate maps, menus, and city posters, and morph into post-it notes, hand towels, and even cappuccino designs. Avid fans of\u00a0<em>maiko<\/em>\u00a0go to photo studios in Kyoto where they can be costumed as <em>maiko<\/em> themselves. This cos-play attracts Japanese and international tourists of all ages. Unlike the revered artifacts and heroes of Kyoto\u2019s past, the\u00a0<em>maiko<\/em>\u00a0inspire play. How does the <em>maiko<\/em> as Cool Japan and Kyoto\u00a0<em>kawaii<\/em>\u00a0(cute) frame \u201cold Japan\u201d itself as an inviting consumable? Why has the teenage\u00a0<em>maiko<\/em>\u00a0displaced the geisha as Kyoto fantasy femme?
