This lecture will focus on an important speech that African American abolitionist and feminist Sojourner Truth delivered at a women\u2019s rights convention in 1851.\u00a0 Truth\u2019s \u201cAin\u2019t I A Woman?\u201d speech is now most frequently published, read, and taught in the United States as poetry.\u00a0 Professor Dinius will discuss Truth\u2019s speech as an early critique of early American feminism\u2019s whiteness, and as one of the first examples of what came to be known in twentieth century gender studies as intersectional theory.\u00a0\u00a0 The lecture also will address the various forms of translation and remediation that Truth\u2019s spoken words have undergone in print over time, and how those choices have affected how Americans think about identity and poetry, historically and in the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Marcy J. Dinius<\/strong> is a Professor of English at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois and a 2022 Fulbright Lecturer at Ochanomizu University and Tsuda University.\u00a0 She received her Ph.D. from Northwestern University.\u00a0Her latest\u00a0book, The Textual Effects of David Walker\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>Appeal:\u00a0Print-Based Activism Against Slavery, Racism, and Discrimination, 1829-1851,<\/em> was published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in April 2022.\u00a0 She has published articles and her previous book on nineteenth-century American writers, including Frederick Douglass,\u00a0Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Edgar Allan Poe.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
