Transnational mobility has become a normative aspiration and lifestyle of young people from urban and middle-class family backgrounds in post socialist China. In the recent decade, there is a fast growing population of Hong Kong people leaving the city to start a new life elsewhere. At the same time, mobility of LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) people around the globe has been accelerated in the past few decades. This also reflects in the number of academic studies on queer migration and the increasingly popular concept of gay tourism and pink economy. The talk will base on Lucetta Kam’s recent study of the transnational mobility of queer Chinese women from China and Hong Kong. She shares the experiences of queer Chinese women in transnational movement and looks at how mobility, sexuality, gender and class are intertwined in queer women’s transnational journey. In particular, she explores the meanings of transnational mobility of queer women in different social and political contexts.

《Speaker》 Lucetta Kam is Associate Professor in the Department of Humanities and Creative Writing at Hong Kong Baptist University. She is the author of Shanghai Lalas: Female Tongzhi Communities and Politics in Urban China (HKU Press, 2013; Chinese edition 2015). Her current projects include the transnational mobility of queer Chinese women, Hong Kong studies and inter-Asian queer popular culture. |
