IGS International Symposium “Women, Religion and Violence in International Perspective”

Date: Wednesday, 19 October, 2016, 18:30–20:30
Venue: 102 Inter-Faculty Building 2, Ochanomizu University

The increasing numbers of women joining violent political organisations has caused enormous concern among scholars, activists, politicians, practitioners as well as ordinary citizens. The active engagement of women in militancy, as foreign fighters, suicide bombers, clerics and leaders, or as rebel fighters, foot soldiers, and sympathisers, supporters and advocates of violent political rhetoric, has challenged conventional understandings of women’s victimologies in war and violence.

This workshop will discusses different methodologies and approaches to the study of gender and conflict and foster a discussion on violence, terrorism and religion through the analysis of motivations, representations and re-elaboration of violent acts.
